Transport depots can change quickly as vehicles arrive, loads are moved and delivery schedules alter. Forklift operators may work around reversing HGVs, visiting drivers, pedestrians, parked trailers and other mobile equipment.

Managing Visiting Drivers and Pedestrians

Visiting drivers may not be familiar with local rules, pedestrian routes or loading procedures. Clear instructions should be provided before loading or unloading begins.

Where practical, drivers should have a safe waiting location away from vehicle movements. Communication methods must be understood by everyone involved, especially when an operator cannot see the driver or the opposite side of the vehicle.

Shift Handover, Defects and Supervision

Depots commonly operate extended hours or multiple shifts. Effective handovers help ensure defects, damaged loads, blocked routes and temporary hazards are communicated before the next operator begins work.

Supervisors should monitor operating standards, ensure pre-use inspections are completed and act when unsafe behaviour is identified. Refresher or remedial training may be required following an incident, a change of equipment, unsafe operation or a decline in competence.
