Overhead Gantry Crane Training
This course is for employees who operate overhead travelling, bridge or gantry cranes in manufacturing, engineering, warehousing and other industrial environments.
Training helps operators understand the crane, its controls and their responsibilities when lifting and moving loads.
Course Options
Novice training: For employees with no previous formal crane operator training.
Experienced operator training: For employees with suitable operating experience but no recognised evidence of formal training.
Refresher training: For previously trained operators requiring reassessment or updated instruction.
Typical duration: Usually 1 day, depending on experience, learner numbers and equipment.
What Does Crane Operator Training Cover?
Training is tailored to the crane and workplace and normally includes:
- Operator responsibilities
- Relevant lifting safety principles
- Crane controls and functions
- Pre-use inspections
- Safe working load information
- Load assessment
- Safe lifting and lowering
- Controlled movement of loads
- Communication during lifting operations
- Pedestrian and workplace hazards
- Emergency procedures
- Safe parking and isolation
- Practical operation and assessment
Operators may require additional instruction when using different crane controls, configurations or specialist attachments.
Crane Controls and Configurations
Overhead cranes can be operated using pendant controls, radio remote controls or a fixed cab. Training must reflect the control system, crane configuration and lifting tasks used at the workplace.
Practical instruction can cover:
- Pendant and radio-remote control functions
- Emergency stops and isolators
- Bridge, trolley and hoist movements
- Correct operator positioning
- Maintaining a clear view of the load and travel path
- Avoiding side pulling, shock loading and uncontrolled swinging
- Safe parking, shutdown and prevention of unauthorised use
Operators changing to a substantially different crane, control system or attachment may require additional instruction and familiarisation.
Load Assessment and Lifting Plans
Before a load is lifted, the people involved must understand what is being moved, how it will be attached and where it will be placed.
Training supports awareness of:
- Load weight and centre of gravity
- The crane's safe working load
- Rated capacities of slings, chains and accessories
- Sling angles and their effect on loading
- Suitable lifting and attachment points
- Load stability, sharp edges and loose components
- The intended travel route and landing area
- Exclusion zones and pedestrian controls
Training does not replace the employer's duty to ensure lifting operations are properly planned, appropriately supervised and carried out safely.
LOLER, Pre-Use Checks and Lifting Accessories
Operators and slinger signallers should know how to complete the checks assigned to them and recognise defects that require equipment to be removed from service.
Checks may include the crane structure, hook and safety catch, wire rope or chain, controls, emergency stop, limit devices, warning systems and visible signs of damage or abnormal operation.
Slings, shackles, eyebolts, chains and other lifting accessories must be suitable for the load, identifiable and within their examination requirements. Defects must be reported and the equipment quarantined in accordance with the employer's procedure.
LOLER thorough examinations are separate from routine pre-use checks and planned maintenance. Employers remain responsible for arranging the required examinations and maintaining suitable records.
Operator, Slinger Signaller and Supervisor Responsibilities
A safe lifting operation may involve several distinct responsibilities:
- Crane operator: operates the crane and moves the load safely.
- Slinger: selects and attaches suitable lifting accessories.
- Signaller: gives clear, agreed directions to the crane operator.
- Lift supervisor: oversees the lifting operation and ensures the agreed plan is followed.
One person may perform more than one role, but they must be trained, competent and authorised for every duty they undertake.
Slinger Signaller Training
Slinger signallers help prepare, attach and control loads while maintaining clear communication with the crane operator.
This course is suitable for employees who select lifting accessories, attach loads or direct crane movements during workplace lifting operations.
Course Options
Novice training: For employees with no previous formal slinger signaller training.
Experienced training: For employees with relevant practical experience who require formal assessment.
Refresher training: For previously trained employees requiring reassessment or updated instruction.
Course duration depends on experience, learner numbers, lifting accessories and the complexity of the workplace operations.
What Does Slinger Signaller Training Cover?
Training normally includes:
- Slinger signaller responsibilities
- Relevant lifting safety principles
- Load weight and centre-of-gravity awareness
- Selecting suitable lifting accessories
- Pre-use checks of lifting accessories
- Safe slinging techniques
- Protecting slings from damage
- Standard hand signals
- Radio and verbal communication
- Controlling suspended loads
- Exclusion zones and pedestrian safety
- Identifying unsafe lifting conditions
- Practical exercises and assessment
The course does not replace the need for lifting operations to be properly planned and appropriately supervised.
Does a Crane Operator Need Slinger Signaller Training?
Crane operation and slinging or signalling are different responsibilities.
An employee who only operates the crane may not need to sling loads. However, anyone who selects lifting accessories, attaches loads or directs crane movement needs suitable training and competence for those duties.
Where one employee performs both roles, appropriate training and assessment may be required for both activities.
Who Should Attend?
Training is suitable for employees working in:
- Engineering
- Manufacturing
- Warehousing
- Fabrication
- Steel stockholding
- Maintenance operations
- Industrial production
- Construction supply
- Logistics and distribution
Employees must be medically fit to perform their duties safely and able to understand the course instruction.
