What Is a Pivot Steer Forklift?
A pivot steer forklift uses an articulated steering system that allows the truck and mast to turn within a confined area.
These trucks are frequently used in warehouses where businesses need to store and retrieve palletised loads from narrow aisles. Common names and manufacturers associated with this equipment include Flexi and Bendi.
Because their steering and handling characteristics differ from conventional counterbalance and reach trucks, operators require appropriate training and assessment for the relevant truck category.
What Is the P1 Pivot Steer Category?
Under the current ABA workplace transport groupings, a rider-operated electric pivot steer truck is classified as P1.
P1 training relates specifically to the operating characteristics of an articulated pivot steer truck. A counterbalance or reach-truck certificate does not by itself cover this category. The make and model should be confirmed before training because control layouts, articulation, visibility and safety systems vary between machines.
Articulated Steering and Rear-End Swing
A pivot steer truck changes direction differently from a conventional counterbalance or reach truck. As the truck articulates, the relationship between the chassis, mast, load and racking changes quickly.
Operators need to understand:
- The truck's pivot point and steering response
- Rear-end and load swing during turns
- Wheel position before travelling or approaching racking
- Clearance around racking uprights, barriers and stored goods
- How articulation affects the position of the forks and load
- Safe correction if the truck is not aligned with the pallet location
Operators should not rely on steering techniques learned on another lift-truck category without suitable conversion training and assessment.
Narrow-Aisle Stacking and Warehouse Safety
Pivot steer trucks are designed to work in restricted warehouse aisles, but the reduced space leaves less margin for poor positioning or observation.
Practical training can include:
- Entering and leaving narrow aisles under control
- Maintaining safe clearance from racking and stock
- Positioning squarely before stacking or de-stacking
- Controlling fork height and tilt during travel
- Checking pallet condition and load stability
- Judging overhead and side clearances
- Managing pedestrians, blind corners and aisle access
- Parking and isolating the truck without obstructing routes
The employer remains responsible for suitable aisle dimensions, racking protection, floor condition, pedestrian controls, lighting and workplace authorisation.

Can a Counterbalance or Reach Truck Operator Use a Pivot Steer Forklift?
Training on a counterbalance or reach truck does not automatically qualify someone to operate a pivot steer forklift.
The equipment has different steering, manoeuvring and load-handling characteristics. Appropriate conversion training and assessment will normally be required before an operator is authorised to use it.

Training is delivered at your premises using your pivot steer forklift and warehouse environment.
Your business will normally need to provide:
- A safe and serviceable pivot steer forklift
- A suitable practical training area
- Appropriate racking and representative loads
- Relevant equipment documentation
- Appropriate personal protective equipment
The training area must provide enough space for practical exercises and assessments to be completed safely. We will confirm the requirements before training begins.
Assessment and Evidence of Training
Operators complete the relevant theory and practical elements of the course.
Those who successfully meet the required standard receive appropriate evidence of training. Employers remain responsible for workplace authorisation and any necessary job-specific or familiarisation training.
