What Is a Pedestrian Pallet Truck?
A pedestrian pallet truck is a powered material handling vehicle controlled by an operator walking alongside or behind it.
These trucks are commonly used to move palletised loads through:
- Warehouses
- Factories
- Loading areas
- Distribution centres
- Retail stockrooms
- Production facilities
Although the operator does not ride on the truck, suitable training is still required because powered pallet trucks can cause injuries, collisions and property damage if used incorrectly.
What Does the Training Cover?
Training is tailored to the equipment and workplace and normally includes:
- Operator responsibilities
- Relevant safety principles
- Pre-use inspections
- Controls and safety devices
- Safe starting and stopping
- Steering and manoeuvring
- Load assessment
- Picking up and depositing loads
- Travelling with and without a load
- Operating on slopes, where appropriate
- Pedestrian and workplace hazards
- Safe parking and securing
- Battery charging procedures
- Practical operation and assessment
Who Should Attend?
Pedestrian pallet truck training is suitable for:
- New warehouse employees
- Production and manufacturing staff
- Loading and dispatch employees
- Retail stockroom workers
- Operators without previous formal training
- Experienced operators requiring assessment
- Previously trained operators requiring refresher training
- Employees changing to a different powered truck
Operators must be medically fit to use the equipment safely and able to understand the course instruction.
Is Training Required for a Powered Pallet Truck?
Employers must ensure that employees using powered work equipment receive suitable training.
The precise training required depends on the truck, workplace, loads and operator’s duties. Employees should not be allowed to use powered pallet trucks without appropriate instruction, practical training and assessment.
Does Forklift Training Cover a Pedestrian Pallet Truck?
Not automatically.
A counterbalance or reach truck operator may understand general load-handling principles, but pedestrian pallet trucks have different controls, operating positions and hazards.
Appropriate conversion or equipment-specific training may therefore be required before the operator is authorised to use one.
