What Is a Reach Truck?

A reach truck is designed to handle palletised loads within warehouse racking systems.

Its compact design and extending mast or fork carriage allow operators to stack and retrieve loads at height while working in narrower aisles than many conventional counterbalance forklifts.

Reach truck controls, steering and stability characteristics differ from other truck categories. Operators therefore require suitable training and assessment before being authorised to use one.

What Does Reach Truck Training Cover?

Training is tailored to the equipment and workplace and normally includes:

  • Operator responsibilities
  • Relevant safety principles
  • Pre-use inspections
  • Controls and instruments
  • Steering and manoeuvring
  • Warehouse travel
  • Load assessment and stability
  • Racking and clearance awareness
  • Pallet placement and retrieval
  • Stacking and de-stacking
  • Operating with restricted visibility
  • Pedestrian and workplace hazards
  • Safe parking and securing
  • Battery charging procedures where relevant

Courses include appropriate theory, practical instruction and operator assessment.

Who Should Attend?

Reach truck training may be suitable for:

  • New warehouse employees
  • Operators without previous formal training
  • Experienced operators requiring assessment
  • Counterbalance operators changing equipment
  • Operators returning after an extended absence
  • Previously trained operators requiring refresher training
  • Employees moving to a different truck or warehouse layout

Operators must be medically fit to use the equipment safely and able to understand the course instruction.

Does Counterbalance Training Cover a Reach Truck?

No. Counterbalance and reach trucks have different controls, steering, stability and handling characteristics.

A trained counterbalance operator will normally require suitable conversion training and assessment before being authorised to use a reach truck.
