Forklift Operations in Trade Yards
Builders’ merchants and wholesale sites often combine storage, vehicle loading and customer access within the same area. Forklift operators may work around vans, delivery vehicles, customers, contractors and employees preparing orders.
On-site training can reflect:
- Customer and pedestrian movement through the yard
- Loading trade vehicles and delivery trucks
- Outdoor surfaces, gradients and drainage areas
- Covered storage, warehouse aisles and canopies
- Restricted visibility around stock and parked vehicles

Handling Timber and Building Products
Timber, sheet materials, blocks, bagged products, drainage goods and steel sections can differ greatly in size, weight and stability. Damaged packaging or poorly supported materials can increase the risk of a load shifting during movement.
Operators should check the load, pallet or banding before lifting. Long products may require suitable equipment, wider turning space and additional control of pedestrian access.

Customer Collections and Vehicle Loading
Customer collections require clear communication between the operator and driver. Customers should remain in a designated safe position while materials are loaded, and the operator must have enough room to approach, place and withdraw the forks safely.
Vehicle suitability, load distribution, securing arrangements and overhead restrictions should be considered before loading begins. Forklift training does not replace the need for suitable site rules and loading procedures.
Outdoor Conditions and Yard Supervision
Uneven ground, potholes, rain, ice, poor lighting and strong winds can affect forklift stability and stopping distances. Yard conditions should be monitored and unsafe areas controlled until they are made safe.
Supervisors should ensure pre-use inspections are completed, defects are reported and operators follow the site’s traffic arrangements. Additional training may be required when equipment, attachments or working conditions change.
