Who Is This Course For?
This course is suitable for:
- Warehouse managers
- Shift managers
- Team leaders
- MHE supervisors
- Health and safety representatives
- Production supervisors
- Logistics and distribution managers
- Employees moving into a supervisory role
- Managers responsible for contractors or temporary operators
Delegates do not necessarily need to be qualified equipment operators, but they should understand the workplace activities they are expected to manage.
What Does the Course Cover?
Course content is tailored to the workplace and normally includes:
- Management and supervisory responsibilities
- Relevant workplace safety principles
- Operator training and authorisation
- Recognising safe and unsafe operating practices
- Monitoring operator performance
- Pre-use inspection arrangements
- Workplace transport risks
- Pedestrian and vehicle segregation
- Equipment suitability
- Load-handling risks
- Site rules and safe systems of work
- Accident and near-miss response
- Refresher and additional training needs
- Maintaining suitable training records
- Practical workplace observations
Why Is MHE Supervisor Training Important?
Supervisors need enough knowledge to recognise unsafe behaviour and take appropriate action.
Without suitable awareness, unsafe practices can become routine and increase the likelihood of collisions, damaged equipment, unstable loads and injuries.
Effective supervision helps businesses:
- Identify unsafe operating habits
- Maintain clear site rules
- Monitor operator competence
- Respond appropriately to incidents
- Identify when additional training is needed
- Improve communication between managers and operators
- Maintain appropriate workplace records
Does This Course Qualify Someone to Operate MHE?
No. This is a management and supervision course.
It does not qualify a delegate to operate a forklift truck or another type of material handling equipment. Anyone required to operate equipment must complete appropriate operator training and assessment for that equipment category.

Operator Training and Authorisation
Managers and supervisors should understand the difference between evidence of training and workplace authorisation.
Successful operator training demonstrates that an employee has completed training and assessment on a particular equipment category. The employer remains responsible for deciding whether that person may operate equipment in its workplace.
Authorisation should reflect:
- The equipment category
- Job-specific instruction
- Workplace familiarisation
- The operator’s current competence
- Any restrictions or additional requirements

When Might an Operator Need Additional Training?
Additional instruction, assessment or refresher training may be appropriate when an operator:
- Develops unsafe working practices
- Has an accident or near miss
- Has not used the equipment for some time
- Uses equipment only occasionally
- Changes equipment category
- Moves to a different workplace or department
- Encounters new loads, attachments or hazards
- Requires additional coaching
