Does Previous Forklift Training Cover Another Truck?
Not automatically.
Forklift categories can have different controls, steering systems, stability characteristics and operating risks. An employee trained on a counterbalance forklift should not simply begin operating a reach truck, pivot steer forklift or multidirectional truck without suitable instruction and assessment.
Conversion training may be appropriate when an operator:
- Has recognised training on another truck category
- Remains competent on the original equipment
- Needs to learn different controls or steering
- Will work with a different mast or lifting system
- Is moving into another warehouse or production role
- Needs authorisation for additional equipment
The operator’s previous evidence of training should be reviewed before the course is selected.
Common Equipment Conversions
Counterbalance to Reach Truck
The operator must adapt to different steering, visibility, controls and warehouse stacking techniques.
Reach Truck to Pivot Steer
Articulated Flexi and Bendi-type forklifts have handling characteristics that differ from conventional reach trucks.
Counterbalance to Multidirectional
Multidirectional trucks may travel forwards, backwards and sideways while handling long or bulky loads.

The correct course and duration depend on the operator, equipment and workplace requirements.
Training for Complete Beginners
Conversion training is only for appropriately trained operators changing equipment categories.
Employees with no previous forklift operating experience will normally require a novice course. This provides progressive theory and practical instruction before assessment.
Other Equipment Available
Burnley businesses can also arrange training for:
- Pedestrian pallet trucks
- Vertical stock pickers
- Mobile elevating work platforms
- Overhead gantry cranes
- Slinger signaller operations
Workplace safety courses are available for MHE managers and supervisors, working at height, risk assessments and method statements.
Training at Your Burnley Workplace
Courses are delivered using the employer’s machinery and facilities.
This allows instruction to relate to the equipment your operators will use, but the workplace must provide:
- Safe and serviceable equipment
- Manufacturer operating instructions
- A suitable practical training area
- Representative loads
- Any relevant attachments
- Appropriate personal protective equipment
We will confirm the site requirements before agreeing to the course.
Course Assessment and Authorisation
Operators complete the relevant theory and practical assessments.
Successful completion provides evidence of training for the equipment category covered. Employers remain responsible for workplace authorisation, task-specific instruction and familiarisation with local procedures.
