When Should Refresher Training Be Considered?
There is no single legally prescribed refresher interval that applies to every forklift operator.
Employers should monitor operator performance and consider additional training or reassessment when an employee:
- Develops unsafe operating practices
- Is involved in an accident or near miss
- Has not operated the equipment for an extended period
- Uses a forklift only occasionally
- Moves to a different workplace
- Encounters changed loads or site conditions
- Requires additional coaching
- Is due for reassessment under company policy
Some employers use a three-to-five-year training cycle alongside ongoing workplace monitoring.
Training Should Match the Equipment
Previous training on one truck category does not automatically qualify an employee to operate every other type of forklift.
GH Training offers courses for:
- Counterbalance forklifts
- Reach trucks
- Pivot steer forklifts
- Multidirectional trucks
- Pedestrian pallet trucks
- Vertical stock pickers
Training is also available for MEWPs, overhead gantry cranes and slinger signaller operations.
Counterbalance Operator Courses
Counterbalance courses are available for complete novices, experienced operators without recognised formal training, operators changing truck category and employees requiring refresher training.
Course content normally includes pre-use checks, stability, manoeuvring, load handling, stacking and safe parking.

Reach Truck Training
Reach truck operators require suitable instruction in warehouse travel, racking clearance, pallet placement, load retrieval and working safely at height.
A counterbalance certificate alone does not cover reach truck operation.

Reviewing Your Training Requirements
Before recommending a course, we will ask about:
- Each operator’s previous formal training
- The date and category shown on existing certificates
- Recent practical operating experience
- Workplace monitoring or safety concerns
- The equipment currently being used
- Changes to loads, racking or site layout
- Any accidents or near misses

Training at Your Chorley Workplace
Courses are delivered at customer premises using the employer’s equipment.
This enables practical instruction to reflect the workplace, but the business must provide suitable facilities. These normally include a serviceable truck, safe training area, operating instructions, representative loads and appropriate personal protective equipment.
Evidence of Training
Operators who successfully complete the relevant theory and practical assessments receive evidence of training.
Employers remain responsible for deciding whether an operator is competent for a particular workplace task and for issuing appropriate workplace authorisation.
Chorley and Central Lancashire Coverage
GH Training supports employers in Chorley and nearby areas including Preston, Blackburn and locations along the M6 corridor.
Courses are also available across Greater Manchester, Merseyside, Cheshire and the wider North West.
