Who Qualifies as an Experienced Operator?
An experienced operator course is not simply a shorter alternative to novice training.
Before recommending it, we need to establish that the employee has sufficient recent experience using the relevant equipment category.
We may ask about:
- How long the employee has operated the equipment
- How frequently they use it
- The type of loads normally handled
- Their experience of stacking and de-stacking
- The workplaces in which they have operated
- Whether unsafe practices have been observed
- Any accidents or near misses
- Previous informal instruction or assessments
An employee whose experience is limited or unsuitable may require novice training instead.
What Does the Course Cover?
Experienced operator training normally includes:
- Operator responsibilities
- Relevant safety principles
- Equipment stability and capacity
- Pre-use inspections
- Controls and instruments
- Safe manoeuvring
- Load assessment and handling
- Stacking and de-stacking
- Safe parking and securing
- Theory and practical assessment
The instructor may correct habits or unsafe practices developed through previous informal equipment use.
Counterbalance Experienced Operator Training
Counterbalance courses are available for suitable operators working in warehouses, loading areas, production facilities and external yards.
Typical duration is two to three days, depending on operator numbers and training needs.
Reach Truck Experienced Operator Training
Reach truck operators must demonstrate safe warehouse travel, accurate pallet placement, racking awareness and control when stacking at height.
Previous counterbalance experience alone does not make someone an experienced reach truck operator.
Training on Other Equipment
Courses can also be arranged for:
- Pivot steer forklifts
- Multidirectional trucks
- Pedestrian pallet trucks
- Vertical stock pickers
- MEWPs
- Overhead gantry cranes
- Slinger signaller operations
Course suitability must be considered separately for each equipment category.
Training at Your Darwen Workplace
Courses take place at customer premises using the employer’s equipment.
The site must normally provide:
- Safe and serviceable equipment
- Manufacturer operating instructions
- A suitable practical training area
- Representative workplace loads
- Any relevant attachments
- Appropriate personal protective equipment
The training area must allow exercises and assessments to be completed without creating unnecessary risk.
Assessment Is Still Required
Practical experience does not remove the need for training and assessment.
Operators must successfully complete the relevant theory and practical elements before receiving evidence of training. Employers remain responsible for workplace authorisation and appropriate familiarisation.
Is the Experienced Course Suitable?
If you are uncertain whether an employee has sufficient experience, complete the training check before selecting a course.
